Horses
Egyptian horses are some of the most beautiful and expensive horse
breeds in the world. There are horse races at the Gezira Sporting Club
in Cairo and at the Alexandria Sporting club all year round
Horses face the same fate as donkeys: they are often a farmers’
only income. Many race horses that can no longer race are sold to
farmers who put them to use pulling carts; others are sold to hansom
cab owners.
As with donkeys, ill-fitting equipment that leads to untreated
wounds and lacerations, sometimes for months, brutal beatings and
endless working hours in grueling conditions leave horses worse for
ware.
Tourism
Horses play an important part in Egypt’s tourism: one can go for a
horse ride in the Pyramids; for a hansom cab ride around parts of the
city; Bedouin nights feature dancing horses at the Pyramids.
Though some establishments treat their horses relatively well,
more often than not these animals are mal-nourished, ill-treated and
are neither offered proper veterinary care nor proper resting hours.
Often, pregnant mares are forced to work long and harsh hours in
harsh weather conditions. Horses are whipped harshly into submission.
